Environment Canada confirmed two tornadoes touched down in southern Ontario on Saturday as severe storms swept across the region. The Northern Tornadoes Project verified touchdowns near Lindsay and in Woodstock, assigning both a preliminary EF0 rating on the enhanced Fujita scale.
Minor damage reported
The Woodstock tornado arrived as the national weather agency issued a tornado warning for the area, forecasting damaging winds, large hail and intense rainfall. Wind speeds for an EF0 typically range between 65 and 85 kilometres per hour.
Given the limited damage reported so far, the Northern Tornadoes Project said it does not plan to deploy survey teams to either location. The group noted on Facebook that evidence of minor damage has surfaced from the Lindsay storm and that it will gather more information before deciding whether a site visit is warranted.
Cleanup underway in Woodstock
The City of Woodstock reported ongoing cleanup efforts on Sunday. Crews are assessing and clearing tree damage on sidewalks, boulevards and in parks. A cricket field fence was damaged in the storm, forcing the field's closure for the day.
