Martha Stewart questions Meghan Markle's pivot to lifestyle television

The domestic arts veteran tells People the Duchess of Sussex's career trajectory from actress to royal to homemaking host lacks a logical through line.

Martha Stewart speaks out on Meghan Markle’s ‘homemaking guru’ career

Martha Stewart has offered a blunt assessment of Meghan Markle's move into lifestyle television, telling People magazine that the transition from actress to princess to on-screen homemaking authority "doesn't sort of follow."

The comments appear in a new cover story for the U.S. publication. Stewart, who built a multimedia empire on domestic expertise, was asked about Markle's Netflix series With Love, Meghan, which debuted after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and relocated to California.

A career path that lacks continuity

"If you're an actress, it's hard to then transition to a princess and then from a princess into a homemaking guru on a television show," Stewart said. "It doesn't sort of follow. So go from there."

The two women have crossed paths socially. Stewart revealed she recently attended a dinner party with Markle but exchanged only a few words. In a 2025 interview with Access Hollywood, Stewart said she planned to watch an episode to "see how she does." She later told Yahoo Lifestyle that authenticity and subject-matter knowledge are paramount. "Meghan, I don't really know very well, and I hope she knows what she's talking about," Stewart said. "Authenticity, to me, is everything."

Netflix future uncertain

With Love, Meghan aired two seasons on Netflix but has not been renewed for a third. In March, a spokesperson for Markle said the series would continue as "seasonal specials," though no air dates have been announced. The show is produced under Archewell Productions, the media company the Sussexes launched as part of their Netflix deal.

Markle has previously addressed comparisons to Stewart and Gwyneth Paltrow. During an appearance on Aspire with Emma Grede, she called the parallels flattering. "Those are incredibly successful business women, so I don't take that lightly," Markle said.

Markle has not publicly responded to Stewart's latest remarks.
